Covering a wide range of fields, the Department of Environmental Design helps students develop abilities to plan and create space designs with an integrated approach which helps in resolving various issues in present-day society. Practice-oriented lessons are offered on such themes as proposals for diverse housing, renovation of existing buildings, pursuit of new public spaces, preservation of local history and culture, and conservation of natural environment. In their final year, students are assigned to a course-specific research laboratory. Students are also encouraged to participate in activities in the larger world outside the university such as community events, local projects, and international workshops.
