Seeking world-class design to meet the needs of society

Students in this department gain professional knowledge and learn visual design techniques in order to master highly expressive and creative design arts. All students initially study essential skills for computer operations, a necessity in the field of visual design today. They can then apply their skills freely in computer-based work that is challenging and expressive. Students also try their hands at hand-painted design work. In their freshman year students learn fundamental knowledge and skills. They choose from two major disciplines in their sophomore year and select one of five courses in their junior year. Faculty members, all prominent members of the design world, offer instruction tailor-made for each student's individual style and personality.

Department of Fashion and Textile Design
Textile Design Course
Fashion Design Course
Fashion Planning Course

Cross-disciplinary study of three fields raises students' overall productive ability

This department offers courses covering the entire process of fashion and textile design, ranging from fabric patterns and stitching clothes to fashion planning and presentation. Students first study essential curricula covering textiles (dyeing and weaving), apparel design, and fashion planning. They choose one of these courses in the second semester of their sophomore year. From design basics to sophisticated expressions, this department offers students multifaceted knowledge and skills, to foster a strong but flexible fashion sense unaffected by passing fads.

Laboratory-based coursework and small-group seminars give students intensive, real-world training

From sundry goods to interior, lighting, and home appliances, the Department of Product Design offers students the knowledge and skills needed to design a broad range of goods for daily needs, designed for today's living spaces. The curriculum places an emphasis on lab-based instruction. In the first year, students learn the basics of plastic design, and they gain first-hand knowledge of various materials and processing technologies in their sophomore year. From the third year they increase their specialized skills and knowledge in separate courses. Our laboratory is fully equipped with machinery that can process a wide range of materials. The department aims to educate designers who can apply a systematic approach flavored by their own distinctive design expressions.

Department of Environmental Design
Architectural Design Course
Town Planning and Landscape Design Course
Housing and Interior Design Course

An integrated three-course curriculum featuring practice-oriented activities

This department deals with a variety of fields, ranging from construction of housing, schools and museums, to community and city planning, landscape design and energy issues. By researching design technologies and concepts in an integrated approach, students seek to create ideal living spaces. In their senior year, students are assigned to a course-specific research laboratory to work on their graduation thesis or project under the individual supervision of faculty members. Students are also encouraged to engage in independent student projects and participate in design competitions, actively committing themselves to community events, local development projects and other practical activities in the larger world.
